The old Tsukiji fish market was, without a doubt, one of the most fascinating and photogenic places in Tokyo. It was like stepping back in time. I visited several times to work on stories about Japanese food and drink, including a memorable article about poisonous fugu puffer fish. I also photographed some of the market’s tens of thousands of workers. Because Tsukiji supplies restaurants, supermarkets and wholesalers, it works through the night. I’d get up very early and arrive about 6 am when people were starting to slow down at the end of their workday. In 2018, the market relocated to a much more modern and boring site.
