The Avon & Somerset Search and Rescue (ASSAR) is an emergency service staffed by highly-trained volunteers. It operates in an area that includes Cheddar Gorge, the highest inland cliffs in the UK, holding regular training sessions in navigation, rope work, tracking and other necessary skills. In 2016, I volunteered to take some photos for ASSAR’s website and outreach. The rescue ropework is spectacular, but I was astonished by the tracking they use to find lost people in the woods, hills and mountains. It really was like something out of a film.
