When the 2011 earthquake and tsunami struck North East Japan, I was working in Tokyo. A few days later, I watched the Fukushima Daichi nuclear power plant explode live on TV. In the following weeks I visited several of the irradiated towns that were made uninhabitable by the disaster. These portraits are of people protesting against nuclear power outside the Japanese Diet. They were all taken after dark. Japanese political demonstrations tend to be smaller than those in the UK, but I don’t think protesters are any less dedicated and determined.
